DENTAL VISITS DURING PREGNANCY

During pregnancy, regular dental visits are essential. Pregnancy is a time when special care should be devoted to oral hygiene as it causes hormonal fluctuations that increase your risk of periodontal (gum) disease. If you already have signs of gum disease, being pregnant can make the condition worse. Pregnancy gingivitis (bleeding and inflammation of the gums) is a common condition which requires dedicated brushing and flossing to keep mouth bacteria to a minimum.

Always be sure to tell your dental professional that you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Inform him or her of any changes in your health or about any medications that you are taking. X-rays are normally avoided during pregnancy unless it is an emergency situation, and of course you would first consult with your physician.

Help make your pregnancy a happy and healthy time by brushing and flossing daily, and by visiting your dental office for a professional cleaning at least every six months, or sooner if you notice any changes in your teeth and/or gums.
